Las Vegas Pool Scene

Spring Break is here. These may be some tough economic times, but as anybody who has been in an airport this week can attest, families and college kids are taking trips in droves. Maybe it’s the excellent travel deals being offered right now, or just the fact that people were cooped up all winter due to a rash of snowstorms, but folks are definitely taking to the friendly skies. Many of them are headed to Las Vegas for a couple of days of “sinful” fun in the sun.

Vegas used to be known simply for its nightlife. The assumption was that most people would spend half the day in bed after staying out all night anyway. The Hard Rock Hotel’s world famous Rehab pool party changed all that in 2004. Suddenly Vegas hotels realized that there was money to be made by fostering a “daylife” pool scene. Now more than 30 Las Vegas hotels offer a nightclub-esque scene at their pools during the day.

Going Zero G in Vegas

Looking for a little something to make that next Las Vegas vacation really special? Sure, you could book a suite at one of the Vegas luxury hotels,  get great seats for some of the thrilling Vegas shows, or splurge on a shopping trip at CityCenter, but really, hasn’t all that been done before? Soon there will be a new way to indulge in Vegas that does not include VIP ropes and bottle serve. Starting February 27, Zero Gravity Corporation will offer weightless flight experiences out of Vegas’s McCarran Airport.

Although Vegas has been known in the past for experiences into other dimensions (see The Hangover for example), this is the first time that actual true zero G flight will be offered in Sin City. During the Zero G experience, which takes place in a specially modified Boeing 727, parabolic arcs are performed by the plane to create a weightless environment. This allows passengers to float, slip, and soar as if they were in space.  Each “weightless period” lasts about 20 to 30 seconds, and each flight includes 12 to 15 of these arcs.

What’s New in Vegas?

The New York Times recently published an article naming The 31 Places to Go in 2010. While the number seems rather arbitrary, I love these kinds of lists because they get me thinking about taking vacations in places that might not have been on my radar otherwise.  Although there are several places I hadn’t heard of before, like Koh Kood in Thailand, there were a surprising number of old standbys. Checking in at number 17 on the list was perennial party favorite Las Vegas.

Although there are great travel deals on Las Vegas hotels and entertainment right now, the article didn’t tout the bargains as reasons to go. Instead, it cited a number of new hotel projects that continue to raise the bar on Las Vegas luxury and fun.

Here is what’s new in Vegas in 2010:
