Now that all the Superbowl hype and fanfare is behind us, the buzz is building around another epic sporting event. That is of course the 2010 Winter Olympics, which will get underway tomorrow. The big news today is the injured shin of designated Olympic darling Lindsey Vonn. I’m sure that the marketing machine at NBC will be able to find another big story to hype – be it Shaun White and his Double McTwist 1280 Whitesnake or perpetual Bad Boy Bode Miller and his, well, perpetual bad boy-ness.
Should the Olympics inspire any pint-sized skiers you might have at home, President’s Day Weekend is a great time to take the family and hit the slopes. A Colorado ski vacation might be just the ticket to grooming your ski grommet into being a future Olympian. Just think, book an Aspen hotel today, and you could be buying a ticket to host-country finalists France, Germany, or South Korea in 2018.
Children’s sports experts agree that one of the keys to instilling a love of any exercise instruction in kids is to keep it fun. If it’s wintertime snow fun you seek, look no further than Colorado’s Keystone Resort this weekend, where Keystone Kidtopia, a festival designed just for kids, will be in full swing.
Kidtopia features a weekend of family fun. The biggest draw, literally, will be the giant snow fort that is currently under construction at the top of Dercum Mountain. With 12 foot walls, a maze, and a giant lookout tower, it has been designed to include even a drawbridge. You can watch the fort’s progress live on the resort’s Snow Fort webcam or follow updates on Twitter.
The Kidtopia activities center, which will be open from 9am-4:30pm daily at the base of the River Run gondola, will have all sorts of fun things to do like cookie decorating, snowflake making, winter crafts and coloring. They will also have hot cocoa available around the firepit starting at 3pm, as well as live music in the plaza.
Those interested in the evening events won’t want to miss Disco Tubing Night. Participants will be able to enjoy caroming down the Adventure Point Tubing course listening to tunes that will make them want to boogie. Other evening activities include the Western Barbeque at Dercum Mountain’s Summit House and the Kids Glow Sticks Ski Parade.
All of this is in addition to the normal family activities at Keystone that include ice skating, ski racing, snow biking, and one of the most extensive night skiing operations in the country. Don’t fret if you can’t make the events this weekend, Kidtopia will be repeated over Spring Break (March 15-21) and Easter Break (April 1-6) as well.
Keystone is located just 90 miles west of the Denver airport, near other popular ski resorts Breckenridge and Vail.
