Valentine’s Day in Cancun

If you can get away from home this week, Valentine’s Day is a wonderful time to spend on a romantic Cancun vacation. (Just ask Fergie and husband Josh Duhamel, who spent Valentine’s Day in Cancun last year.) While it’s cold and snowy almost everywhere in the United States right now, the white sand beaches of Mexico are warm and welcoming — especially in Cancun, where the beach recovery project is moving full steam ahead. Instead of shoveling slush, you could be lounging on the beach sipping champagne and feasting on lobster with your honey.

Even if you can’t book a Cancun hotel this week, there is still a way for you to get there sometime in the next year. The Marriott Cancun is holding a Valentine’s contest on its “Weddings in Cancun” Facebook page.  The contest winner will receive a free stay in Cancun. The contest asks fans to post a story on the Weddings in Cancun wall of the most original Valentine’s Day gift they have ever given or received. Other fans of the page will vote on the stories, and the story with the most votes will win the trip.

The winner will receive not only one free day and night at the hotel, but also a free vow ceremony on the beach or at the ocean front gazebo. This can be either a renewal or symbolic vow ceremony, and will be performed by a local minister. The prize package also includes a custom created bouquet as well as a sparkling wine toast. The story posting and voting are still open until February 12, so get those romantic and original gift posts out there.

If you are going to be in Cancun, you can take advantage of your hotel’s romance package, which will be amped up a notch for Valentine’s Day. The Grand Velas Riviera Maya, for example, offers a “Do Not Disturb” Valentines package for the entire month of February that includes champagne and wine, couples massage, and in-room dining.

The Ritz Carlton Cancun, as another example, offers a Love & Chocolate Valentine’s treatment at their spa that consists of a chocolate and berries facial, a body exfoliation, a relaxing wrap, and a chocolate body lotion application with a soft massage. Not only will you be totally relaxed upon leaving the spa, you’ll be good enough to eat.

A number of Cancun hotels and restaurants will be hosting special romantic dinners this weekend as well. The Ritz Carlton’s Fantino, serving Meditterean fine dining, will be featuring a “His and Her” menu with food items that are supposedly geared towards either the male or female palate, while many hotels, like Dreams Cancun,  will offered an extended version of their champagne brunch on Sunday.
